2019 English 12 College Prep Summer Reading Assignment

Over the summer, read Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel and write a response to each of the following discussion items:

1. Compare and contrast the experiences of the pandemic survivors with the experiences of the inhabitants of Station Eleven.

2. In literature, a theme is the message that the author communicates to the reader. Theme is a matter of interpretation, so there are many possible themes, even some the author didn’t consider. According to your interpretation, what is the theme of Station Eleven? You may consider more than one possible theme as long as you support your interpretation of each theme.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:
1. Each response must be at least two complete single-spaced typed pages. Font requirement: Times New Roman, 12 point font
2. You must develop your responses with specific support (direct quotations) from the novel. Keep your quotations brief and relevant to your discussion. Properly cite all quotes with in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
3. Both responses must be completed by the first day of school. You will submit these responses through Google Docs and www.turnitin.com. Plagiarized papers will result in a zero, a referral, and potential removal from National Honor Society. Please submit your own work.
4. During the summer, if you have questions about this assignment, you can post a message in Google Classroom (code: frz1h6), or email: Mrs. Johnson: ajohnson@salem.k12.va.us
